How does it work?

Belt Driven Live Roller conveyor uses a single motor to move items long distances. The key difference between it and a gravity conveyor is that it momentarily stops items at different checkpoints. Belt-drive conveyor systems are mostly used for medium- to heavy loads, pallets, for example.
The main difference between roll-to-roll-driven conveyors is the driven principle. A belt-driven roller conveyor uses V-belts, or flat belts, that are supported by controlled pressure on the underside of the rollers. As the belt moves, friction between the belt and the roller causes the roller to rotate. Roll-to-roll-driven conveyors are driven by elastic loops from roller to roller in series. How many models are there?

The Roach series of belt-driven live roller conveyors includes a variety of models:
Live Roller Conveyor Curve with 4 Models.

The capacity of both: 300 lb. of total distributed live load. The speed is 60 FPM, constant. Both have bed: 6″ x 1-1/2″ x 12 ga. formed steel channel frame.
However, the tangents of the Spur Conveyor Curve are 12″ on both ends on a 60/30 degree unit and 18″ on both ends on a 45/45 degree unit.
In contrast, model 138LRC has tangents of 12″ both ends on a 90-degree unit; 18″ both ends on a 45-degree unit.

The one thing you should know about the model 196 LRC is that tangents are 1′-0″ both ends on 90 degrees; 1′-6″ both ends on 45 degrees; 1′-0″ both ends on 180 degrees. Tangent roller centers are provided on 3″ RC.

The first model, Roach 796CALR, is ideally suited for side loading, unloading, or temporary accumulation. Its unique cam allows tread roller drive pressure to be adjusted in only seconds.
Roach 251CALR is the choice to horizontally move heavier unit loads where transfers, side loading, or unloading are required. Its standard center drive allows for reversible operation.
The difference is the specifications. The Medium-duty model has a bed: 6″ x 1-1/2″ x 12 ga. channel frame slotted for tread rollers to pop out. Speed is 60 FPM, constant.
The Heavy-duty model has a bed: 7″ x 1-1/2″ x 10 ga. formed steel channel frame is slotted for tread rollers to pop out. When the unit is installed at 7′-0″ elevation or higher, rollers must be retained in the conveyor frame. The speed is 35 FPM, constant.

There are two big types of chain-driven live roller conveyors: straight and curved.

Roach 192 CDLRC is a medium-duty chain-driven live roller curve, designed to transport medium-duty loads such as castings or drums. If you need the straight model 192 look at CDLR 192CDLR , a medium-duty chain-driven live roller conveyor. Optional equipment is available. The speed is constant at 1.5-100 FPM; DC variable speed; AC inverter variable speed. Note that the capacity changes with speed 100 FPM max with roll-to-roll chain drive.

351TCDLRC is a true taper heavy duty chain driven live roller curve. Ideal for conveying pallets or other heavy unit loads, this conveyor features a “true taper” to maintain product orientation throughout the curve. Here is a heavy-duty 11 ga. tapered rollers, model 351T with sprockets, for true taper effect.

Model 251 is also presented in straight and curved variations. Model 251CDLRC, a heavy-duty chain-driven live roller curve. Heavy castings, drums and other loads not requiring product orientation may be effectively conveyed on this conveyor. Speed is 35 FPM, constant. It is especially suited for carrying loads in the presence of oil and other such contaminants. The chain drive is enclosed, top and bottom, along the entire length of the conveyor. The drive is located on the outside of the curve.

Model 251CDLR is a heavy-duty chain-driven live roller conveyor, specifically designed to transport heavy loads. The model has a roll-to-roll chain drive, minimum overall conveyor length with drive 5′-3″, and maximum overall conveyor length: 58′-6″. Roller bearings of the model 251CDLR provide a roller capacity of 540 lbs. per roller (maximum).

Roach model 3530CDLR is ideal for transporting very heavy unit loads. This heavy-duty chain-driven live roller is designed with heavy .300 wall steel rollers, larger-sized roller chains, and heavy-duty structural frames and supports for applications demanding ultra-durable construction for longevity and durability. Roller capacity is 2500 lbs. per roller. The bed lengths (7-1/2″ RC, #80 CHAIN): Minimum overall conveyor length with drive 5′-0″. Maximum overall conveyor length 80′-0″.

This belt model is approved by the FDA & the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The motor drive: 1/3 HP, 230/460/3, 60 cycles, ODP right angle gear motor on 45-degree and 90-degree curves; 3/4 HP supplied on all 180-degree curves.

Raised rib plastic belt conveyor. Conveyors with raised rib plastic belts are designed for transporting, accumulating, and transferring cans, bottles, or other small items that are normally difficult to transfer. Finger transfer plates are provided on both ends of the conveyor to facilitate smooth product transfer.

A transverse roller top plastic belt conveyor is ideal for applications requiring 90° product transfer on or off, product centering, or carton rotation (“box turner”). The product can be diverted from or merged onto a conveyor with standard transverse-mounted rollers in the belt. 

Heavy-duty plastic belt conveyor series 1200 flat top belting is used on model HD1200PB for heavy unit loads and pallet handling. And series 400 flat top belting is used on model HD400PB for heavy unit loads. The belt speed of both is 35 FPM.

Poly-V powered roller zero pressure accumulating conveyor with rollers set low, Models 796PRA-2PV & 796PRA-3PV is well-known thanks to the poly-V belt. Poly-V ribbed belts are the heavy duty options. Heavy duty powered roller conveyor with the Poly-V belt features lengthwise grooves providing a drive-by adhesion, and optimizes the contact area, giving increased power transfer. Rail wheel conveyors

Rail wheel conveyors are commonly floor- or rack-mounted to convey unit loads utilizing two or more parallel rail conveyors. Rail-wheel conveyors are lightweight. There are some models of rail wheel conveyors. They vary in weight, number of wheels per foot, and maximum frame capacity. For instance, model RCD rail wheel conveyors are available in two popular styles. Model RCD-3 features wheels in a 3” pattern, while model RCD-1.5 includes a 1-1/2” staggered dense wheel pattern.

Gravity skate wheel conveyors

Gravity skate wheel conveyors are designed for two big applications: straight and curved sections. Frames: formed galvanized steel channel 2-1/2” x 1” x 12 ga. Frame capacity: galvanized steel 350 lbs. max. distributed live load per 10’ section, or 1300 lbs. per 5’ section. The curves are 4’ or 5’ outside radius.
Please note that different manufacturers indicate different numbers of wheels that should be placed under the product. This depends on the total width of the conveyor and the model. A gravity flow skate wheel conveyor is used to move light loads with smooth flat bottoms, such as cartons and plastic boxes, crates, sheets, etc.

Gravity roller conveyors

Gravity roller conveyors are used to move loads with an uneven bottom. Thus, items should never be longer than the length of the rollers. Notice that the conveyor’s total width includes the frame’s width, which is one inch on either side of the rails. So, if your package requires 16 inches, the gravity roller conveyor width should be at least 18 inches.
There are various models of straight and curved gravity roller conveyors. Curves with a 4′-0″ inside radius are manufactured in 45-degree sections and require full support at the center of the curve.

There are also two types of curved gravity roller conveyors: single and double roller curves. Gravity conveyor roller capacity is available from 250 to 540 lbs. per roller.
For straight sections of a steel gravity roller conveyor, roller capacity can be 700 and 2500 lbs. per roller, depending on the model. This allows them to be used for the transportation of pallets. However, be careful while utilizing the conveyor 24/7/365 as the equipment can malfunction.
Gravity roller conveyor systems exist in some variations: light-duty gravity roller conveyors, medium-duty, and heavy-duty gravity roller conveyors. This depends on the standard roller sizes and loads. Larger rollers can support more weight, but they are more expensive.

Gravity-feed conveyors

Gravity-feed conveyors support transferring materials onto another type of conveyor or equipment. Typically, a gravity feed roller conveyor is used to automatically feed products into an assembly system. The times when feed conveyors were only talked about in the case of raw material feeding are gone. Now you can use them to assemble items up to a certain level and then push them to the surface of the next equipment, such as a gravity belt conveyor, to eliminate labor.

How do conveyor sortation systems work?

Sortation Conveyor Systems include an induction system, a system that merges, and sortation diverts. In goods-to-person picking scenarios, the sortation conveyor identifies individual items on the surface and then directs them to the correct locations using different devices controlled by task-specific software.

There are two main technological types of sorting conveyor systems:  linear and loop (also known as circular) sortation systems.

The linear sorter, or shoe sorter, is always on. There is no need to stop the belt from unfolding individual items into their designated branches. 

The sortation conveyor is arranged so that all items on a surface are scanned (measured) and branched if the characteristics (e.g. dimensions) match the required ones and otherwise continue on the conveyor belt. Thus, linear systems facilitate a steady flow of items and can divert items to one or two sides. If linear sorters are used, items enter the sorter at only one location.

The loop sorters have more than one induction point at which items are placed in the sorter. 

What should you consider when opting for the right sortation conveyor systems?

• Dimensions (length, width, height) and weight of your products.
• Size of the facility because the type of sorter depends on the area it will take up.
• Your budget, because the price of the sortation system is based on size, speed, and technology.

The other types’ names depend mostly on the applications, such as Right-Angle Transfers, Narrow Belt Sorters, Cross-Belt Sorters, Pop-Up Wheel Sorters, Pusher / Paddle Sorters, Shoe Sorters, Bombay Sorters, Tilt Tray Sorters, and Pocket Sorters.

Right-angle transfers are typically used for fragile products of different sizes and weights. They can be used to transfer products to a non-power conveyor or onto parallel conveyors when only one device is required.

The Narrow Belt Sorter utilizes multiple belts to transport products to diverters that have been strategically located along the sorter. Both the Skewed Wheel Diverter and the Roller Diverter can be used as means of diverting from the Narrow Belt Sorter. The model NBS from Roach has a 90° roller transfer (single or bidirectional) and a 30° skewed wheel diverter (single direction). How does it work?

Line Shaft Conveyors are primarily used for package handling systems. Why? Because a line shaft-driven conveyor is a cost-effective and safe solution thanks to its driving design. What are the features of line shaft conveyors?

• Model RBT3 provides an excellent method of transferring up to 100 products at 90° intervals. No drive is necessary when mounted on a Roach line shaft-driven conveyor. What are conveyor accumulation systems for?

In addition to the main aim of conveyors, such as moving items, they also create buffer zones to hold products between different operations until they reach other equipment surfaces. In a nutshell, they keep products in a queue before moving forward. The main benefits are:

• Space-saving equipment, especially vertical and spiral ones that decrease a footprint
• Wide functionality: while accumulating items, you can also dry, cool, etc. at the same time
• Increased throughput of the entire process by up to 30%, by bounding production lines with different speed; as a result, operators can oversee multiple stations simultaneously

What are the types of accumulation pressure conveyors?

Nowadays, there are different manufacturers and types of accumulation conveyors. Each brand has its own documentation of specifications. However, we can divide all of them into two big groups:  minimum pressure and zero pressure. We’ll also talk a little bit about medium-pressure, heavy-duty zero-pressure, and zero-contact.

Zero-pressure accumulation conveyor became his name due to the zero-pressure process of conveying items, like this: the first item moves to the surface and stops when the photo-eye informs them that the next item comes. Thus, the items do not touch each other.

Let’s look at Roach 196ZPA, which safely accumulates packages with zero back pressure utilizing zone singulation operation. Loads up to 125 lbs./ft. may be effectively handled with its unique design. The speed of the conveyor is 60 FPM, constant. This conveyor features NO minimum weight limitations. Sensor rollers are utilized to accumulate products with previously difficult minimal weight restrictions.

The most common zero-pressure conveyors use rollers to transport items while using a retro-reflective photo-eye to accumulate products into zones. For instance, Roach SZ196ZPA SMART ZONE®, a medium-duty zero-pressure accumulation roller conveyor, replaces sensor rollers with photoelectric sensors to accumulate products with previously difficult minimal weight restrictions and is easy to install.

It is designed to safely accumulate heavy products such as castings, drums, containers, and heavy pallet loads in 5’ zones. The Roach design incorporates photoelectric sensors instead of sensor rollers, which eliminates many of the problems associated with conveying wooden pallets. Products do not touch during accumulation and are singulated individually off of the conveyor. This horizontal zero-pressure accumulation conveyor is easy to install and simple to maintain.

Is there belt zero pressure?  Sure, the horizontal zero-pressure accumulation conveyor belt system works the same way. Depending on your operation and product type, you can opt for zero pressure, zero contact, and minimum contact accumulation conveyor belts.

Minimum- or medium-pressure accumulation conveyors utilize a flat drive belt. As items are driven together at the end of the line, upstream pressure will not crush the first item to reach the end. A minimum-pressure conveyor is effective for handling similar-sized items. Note, that back pressure can cause wider products to rotate around smaller items during accumulation in applications with different-sized products. A low-pressure accumulation conveyor allows accumulating items with 2%-3% line pressure.

Accumulation conveyors for every need

The zero-contact accumulation conveyor has eliminated touching items to each other by using the individual place in its zone for every item.

The accumulation table conveyor uses the principle of rotary accumulation tables. They provide a place to temporarily store items thanks to a special design that allows products to recirculate on the table and wait to be passed back into processing. Such a buffer keeps the entire process running smoothly. The best example of their use is the beverage industry. Bottle accumulation conveyor helps the production line keep moving until the bottleneck problem is resolved.

A spiral accumulation conveyor is the best solution to create an optimal footprint.  However, pay attention to the size of the products. A large package and its weight are not a good idea.

If you are in the electronics, food, or bakery industries, consider a vertical accumulation conveyor, that moves items from one level to another by elevators’ principle. They can be gravity-actuated or electrically powered, and convey up to 60 items per minute.

The incline conveyors come to the rescue. Their speed varies from 30 ft/min up to 120 ft/min or higher. The decline conveyors, in contrast to the inclines, are commonly used to move items from an elevated platform to ground level with gravity aids and no extra energy.

That is why incline (upward) and decline (downward) conveyors are suitable for operations in loading docks, mezzanines, or floor-to-floor transitions.

Ready to implement?

Focus on the following aspects:

• The power of the incline conveyor depends on the angle. Mostly, the maximum angle for an incline conveyor is 30 degrees; commonly, it is 25 degrees. It depends on the specifics of your items – their dimensions, weight, packaging material, etc.
• The inclination angle is directly related to the height, width and length of the belt, as well as the size and shape of the goods. We will be happy to help you determine the critical dimensions of the conveyor that will match your specific application! It is important to know that when a 30-degree incline is exceeded, the boxes may slip back down. To avoid this, choose the correct type of conveyor (roller or slider) and the right type of surface (cleated belt conveyors, troughed, sidewall, curved belt conveyors).
• Notice that a typical incline conveyor has a single or double nose. The nose-over allows a smooth transition from the horizontal to the decline, or vice versa. The single nose-over is normally used when the angle exceeds 0 – 15 degrees. For the double nose-over – 30 degrees.

Is there a better way?

You can use a spiral vertical conveyor or a steep cleated incline conveyor instead of a traditional incline/decline belt conveyor. But there are special nuances.

A steep incline conveyor indeed lets you convey material at inclines up to 90°, takes up less space and is represented in “L” or “S” configurations. Thanks to the S-type configuration, the conveyor can replace two belts or a bucket elevator. However, a steep incline conveyor has a lower product capacity than a standard incline.

Spiral conveyors may be the best solution in limited space, but can be limited when it comes to larger products.

What is a Box Style Slider Bed Belt Conveyor?

Slider Bed Conveyors (a.k.a. belt conveyors) are one of the most versatile conveyor types available.  Slider bed conveyors have a belt that slides along a solid surface.  This particular model has a 12 gauge steel channel frame with a 14 gauge steel slider frame.

How does it operate?

The motor is mounted on the side of the conveyor section.  It uses a drive pulley to pull the belting across the slider bed surface.  Its design provides smooth conveyance for odd-shaped or unstable products.  Station workers alongside the conveyor belt system to perform multiple functions during the manufacturing process.

Where are these used?

Slider bed style conveyors can be used to transport loose parts, boxes, small pallets & more.  This conveyor is ideal when your production line needs to move loose/bulky materials.  These conveyors are generally used in areas where space is limited.  It can also be used for trash and dunnage handling applications.  Not recommended for heavy duty or abrasive materials.
