Waterfall Wire Decking: What It Is & Why You Need It for Pallet Racks

What is Waterfall Wire Decking? Waterfall wire decking is a type of shelving support used in pallet racks. It consists of a wire mesh deck with edges that curve downward over the rack beams. The term “waterfall” comes from the design, where the wire mesh extends over the rack beams and bends downward, resembling the flow of water over a ledge.

How Does Waterfall Wire Decking Work?

Thanks to the design of waterfall decking, you can fit it securely onto the beams of pallet racking with no additional fasteners. Wire decking evenly distributes the weight of stored items across the entire shelf. This reduces pressure on individual beams, minimizes the risk of collapse, and ensures a sturdy and ventilated shelf for storing goods.

Types of Waterfall Wire Decking

  • Standard Waterfall Wire Decking (In Stock) – The most commonly used type, featuring edges that wrap over the front and back beams for added stability and safety. Designed to fit standard pallet rack beams.

  • Inside Waterfall Wire Decking (Custom Application) – Designed for recessed decks, where the waterfall edge sits inside the rack beam instead of over it. Provides a clean and seamless look.

  • Flanged Waterfall Wire Decking (In Stock) – A super practical option! The flange at the end of the channels helps it sit securely on both box and step pallet rack beams, making setup easy and stable.

  • Inverted U Channel Wire Decking (Custom Application) – A specialized wire deck built to fit step beams. Its inverted channel design helps prevent dust and debris buildup. Therefore, it is ideal for food processing.

  • Duo Fold Support Channel Waterfall Wire Decking (Custom Application) – Your choice for a secure fit! Designed for shorter step channel beams, offering maintained strength with two weld points on each channel and a true “U” channel reinforced into a sturdy “W” shape.
  • Up-Turned Waterfall Wire Decking (Custom Application) – This type of deck is designed to provide safety and minimize damage: One edge of wire mesh is bent upwards while the other is lowered for a secure hold, so your boxes stay in place without slipping off.

Key Benefits of Using Waterfall Wire Decking

  • The open design of wire decking promotes air circulation, which helps reduce dust and moisture buildup. This is especially beneficial in warehouses where airflow is crucial for maintaining a clean and organized environment.
  • With the mesh design, you can easily see through the decking, making it simpler to manage inventory and spot any missing or misplaced items. This is particularly helpful when managing large volumes of goods.
  • Since the wire decking can support not only pallets but also various types of loads like boxes, bales, or other irregularly shaped items, you don’t need separate shelving for these different goods. You can optimize your current storage space by using your existing pallet racks, without the need for any additional setups.

Durability & Weight Capacity

  • Unlike wooden shelving, wire decking doesn’t warp, splinter, or rot over time. It can withstand exposure to moisture and is much more durable, providing a long-term, reliable solution for your storage needs.
  • The design and material of wire decking allow it to carry heavier loads without compromising structural integrity. Whether you’re storing heavy boxes or equipment, the decking distributes the weight evenly.
  • Wire decking provides a major safety benefit over wood. It has a significantly lower fire risk, as metal doesn’t catch fire as easily as wood, reducing potential damage in case of a fire. Additionally, the open structure allows for better sprinkler coverage and airflow, helping to reduce fire hazards.

Installation & Maintenance Tips

Step-by-Step Installation Guide:

Step 1. Measure Your Pallet Rack for Proper Fit. Before installing wire decking, you need to measure the depth and width of your pallet rack system:

  • Depth: This must match the depth of the pallet rack frames (common sizes include 36″, 42″, 44″, 48″, and 60″ deep).
  • Width: This depends on the beam length. For example:
    1. 46″ wide decks for 4ft, 8ft, and 12ft beams
    2. 52″ wide decks for 9ft beams
    3. 58″ wide decks for 10ft beams

Step 2. Position the Wire Decking on Top of the Beams

  • Lift the decking and carefully place it on the front and back beams of the pallet rack. If it’s a large or heavy piece, ask a coworker for help. For example, a 42” x 46” wire deck may require two people to lift and place securely.
  • Check the U-channel supports underneath the wire decking. These 3 U-channel supports are designed to fit 1 5/8″ step beams, ensuring a proper fit and load distribution.

Step 3: Ensure the Waterfall Edges Hang Over the Front and Back Beams

  • Check that the curved “waterfall” edges of the decking hook over the front and back beams. This helps prevent movement and increases stability. If the edges do not align properly, adjust the decking by sliding it slightly until it fits securely.
  • Visually inspect to ensure the wire decking is flush against the beams and does not shift.

Step 4: Distribute the Load Evenly

  • Standard wire decking supports 2,500 lbs. of uniform distributed load (except for 60″ deep styles, which support 2,000 lbs.).
  • When storing items, avoid placing excessive weight on one side. Instead, evenly distribute bins, boxes, or pallets across the surface.

Avoid expensive damage and downtime. Use Load Capacity Labels to clearly mark weight limits and store safely.

Step 5: Determine How Many Wire Decks You Need

The number of wire decks depends on the beam length:

  • 96″ beams → (2) 46″ wire decks per level
  • 108″ beams → (2) 52″ wire decks per level
  • 120″ beams → (2) 58″ wire decks per level
  • 144″ beams → (3) 46″ wire decks per level

For quick reference:

  • 8ft, 9ft, or 10ft beams → 2 decks per beam level
  • 12ft beams → 3 decks per beam level

Step 6: Perform a Final Safety Check

  • Lightly push or shake the decking to ensure it is secure and does not shift.
  • Verify that all waterfall edges are properly hooked over the beams.
  • Confirm that the load is evenly distributed to prevent bending or failure.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Buying Wire Decking

  • Choosing the Wrong Size – Ensure the decking dimensions match your pallet rack specifications.
  • Ignoring Weight Limits – Check the load-bearing capacity to avoid safety hazards.
  • Not Checking Compatibility – Different beam types require specific wire decking styles.
