When Was Your Racking System Last Inspected for Issues Like These?

Bent or Damaged Strutting

Damaged horizontal or diagonal braces reduce load integrity.

Damaged Beams

Look for twisted, bent, or unclipped beams—these are high-risk and should be taken out of service immediately.

Forklift damage to upright columns

Check for damage from forklift, twisted columns.

Missing concrete anchors

Finding any missing concrete anchors needs an attention and repair.

Excessive rust or corrosion

Any rusted or corrupted pallet rack element should be replaced.

Missing capacity stickers

Labels/plaques informing of maximum load capacity should be visible. Unknown load capacities need to be calculated by an engineer.

Excessive beam deflection from overloading

Check for overloaded beams, missing safety bars, badly positioned pallets. Maximum allowable beam deflection:
Length (in)/180.

Homemade repairs

Any homemade or welded repair should be replaced with engineer solution.

Missing or disengage safety pins

Safety pins plays essential role in keeping construction solid and safe.

Loose anchor bolts

Check for loose or damaged anchor bolts and or foot plates.

How Do We Fix the Problem?

Speedrack West engineers offer real, field-tested solutions to the most common rack damage and safety issues.

  • Repair if front-to-back, corner, or aisle-side deflection exceeds ½ inch
  • Straighten or replace footplates twisted more than ½ inch
  • Repair horizontal or diagonal struts if deflection is greater than ½ inch
  • Replace overloaded beams and torn or damaged components due to improper installation
  • Reinforce the lower frame—the most impact-prone area of your rack system

What Do the Tag Colors Mean? During inspection, each rack is labeled with a color-coded tag to indicate its condition:

  • Green – Safe to Use. The rack is in good condition and approved for regular use without restrictions.
  • Yellow – Needs Monitoring. The rack has minor issues. Do not overload it, and monitor closely for any changes or worsening damage.
  • Red – Replace Immediately. The rack is unsafe. It must be removed from service and replaced as soon as possible.

How Often Should You Inspect Your Pallet Racking?

The right inspection schedule depends on factors like warehouse activity, rack condition, and regulatory requirements. But here’s what we typically recommend:

Recommended Inspection Schedule:
  • Monthly or Quarterly Walkthroughs. Regular checkups help catch early signs of wear, impact, or misalignment.
  • Annual Full Safety Audit. A deeper inspection to evaluate structural integrity, compliance, and long-term performance.
  • New Rack Installation Review. Every new rack system should be inspected before use to ensure proper installation and safety.
  • Post-Incident Inspection. Any time a rack is hit, overloaded, or affected by seismic activity, an immediate inspection is critical.

Note: Always refer to local codes and OSHA standards to align your inspection frequency with industry requirements.
