Chemicals, Fluids & Specialty Materials

Chemicals, Fluids & Specialty Materials

Dealing with chemicals, industrial fluids, or specialty materials in your warehouse? Not sure if you can keep corrosives next to oxidizers like hydrogen peroxide or potassium permanganate? We’ve seen it happen—one bad mix and your entire shift stops. Even one spill or missed regulation can stop production, ruin inventory, or put your crew at risk.

You need racks and shelving that hold the weight, stop leaks, and follow OSHA and EPA rules. That means heavy-duty shelving and chemical racks built for real-world chemical storage.

Regulations That Drive Storage Design

Chemicals drive a huge slice of U.S. manufacturing¹—your warehouse is part of that supply chain. It covers everything from paints and adhesives to oils and specialty chemicals for healthcare or energy. Chemicals differ widely—some burn, some react, and even those that seem harmless can have strict storage rules. Those rules dictate everything from cabinet placement to rack design to prevent spills or accidents.

Many common chemicals need handling or separation to meet OSHA, EPA, and NFPA rules. Here’s what matters most:

  • Heavy loads: A 55-gallon drum can weigh 400–500 lbs.—store it incorrectly, and it could topple. Our racks are built to hold the weight without collapsing.
  • Separation rules: Acids, flammables, and oxidizers need to stay apart to avoid reactions. Our rack layouts make separation simple with dedicated zones.
  • Spill control:  You need trays or sills at least 4 in high indoors or 12 in outdoors to catch leaks, per OSHA and EPA. Our racks work with your spill gear to keep leaks contained.
  • Airflow and fire safety: Open racks let sprinklers and airflow do their job. Chemical-rated sprinklers meet fire safety rules—must-haves to pass inspections.
  • Handling basics: Store smaller containers at eye level for safe access, keep all containers labeled and closed (per OSHA), and have emergency eyewashes nearby for corrosive areas².
RequirementDescriptionSource
Quantity LimitsMax 25 gallons of flammables outside cabinets; 60 gallons per cabinet; 1,585 gallons of combustibles per fire area (with sprinklers). Other classes, like oxidizers, have specific caps.OSHA³, NFPA
SeparationKeep acids and flammables 20 feet apart or use barriers.OSHA, SDS
Spill ControlUse trays or curbs for the biggest container.EPA, OSHA
Airflow and Fire SafetyEnsure airflow; use fire-safe cabinets for flammables.OSHA, NFPA
Storage Heights and LayoutStore below eye/shoulder level to avoid spills; heavy items low. Keep clear aisles (at least 3 ft), no stacking over 30 gallons without stability.OSHA, NFPA, IFS

Even ordinary stuff can have unexpected requirements. We know these rules are a hassle—our racks make them easier to follow.

Racks and Systems That Handle Your Chemical Storage Needs

We design, permit, and install racks that handle the toughest chemical storage challenges, so you stay in line with OSHA, NFPA, and EPA. We handle layouts and permitting to satisfy local authorities, so your warehouse stays safe and ready for inspections.

Our racks and shelving integrate with these, ensuring compliance with segregation and containment rules.

Heavy-Duty Storage for Drums and IBC Totes. Handling 55-gallon chemical drums or 275-gallon IBC totes filled with solvents, oils, or corrosives? Outfit your cantilever racking system or pallet racks with the decking that meets OSHA and EPA standards. These systems hold heavy loads, allow airflow, and keep spills contained.

Powder and Bulk Material Storage. Storing 25–50 lb. sacks of powders or granular materials? Keep them in a cool, dry, rodent-proof spot, ideally in a rodent-proof container. Pallet racks and Boltless chemical storage shelves offer proper load capacity and various types of quick access. If you work with liquid chemicals or other hazardous substances, add secondary containment trays to stay spill-compliant—perfect for multi-batch setups organized by SDS class.

Fire and Core Compliance Decking. NFPA 13-compliant pallet rack decking keeps sprinklers working, stays clean, and mounts easily. Pick the decking that fits your load and fire code. Wire decking is a common option for storing products on pallets. Punched deck is the stronger option that has 50% open area for sprinkler water flow and is NFPA 13 compliant. Need a smooth surface? Solid steel pallet rack decking with reinforced channels does the job. Sits on step beams for a solid shelf that handles heavy pallets.

High-Density Racks for Space & Flow. If your inventory rotation is LIFO (Last-In First-Out) and you need more space, utilize drive-in racking or pushback pallet rack, which stores 4–6 pallets deep and handles temps from 122°F down to –76°F. It is great for high-density storage of palletized compounds in cold environments, so you don’t lose space or let product expire. Pallet flow racking ensures FIFO (First-In, First-Out) flow, helping you avoid expired stock. It operates from –4°F to +95°F.

Vertical Storage Racks for Gas Cylinders. Use vertical storage racks for oxygen and other medical gas tanks. Each bay has back beams with dividers to keep tanks in place. Front beams can be positioned at the top and bottom to keep cylinders upright and secure.

Warehouse Protection Accessories. Protect your setup with safety accessories like rack guards, nets, and barriers. A dropped pail of grease is one thing, but a spilled tote of hazardous material can be disastrous.Simple add-ons like rack back protectors prevent costly damage. Forklifts hitting racks? It happens. Column guards take the impact, not your uprights—they’re inexpensive, replaceable, and stackable for full-height protection.

Layout & Stock Compliance. OSHA defines hazardous chemicals as any substance that requires SDS under the Hazard Communication Standard. SDSs provide detailed information on health and physical risks, along with protective measures. Facilities that submit SDSs or hazardous chemical lists must also file an annual report showing how materials are stored. That’s where Speedrack West comes in: we’ll design and set up a warehouse layout that works anywhere in the U.S.

Don’t Risk Non-Compliant

Don’t Risk Non-Compliant Chemical Storage

From corrosives to oxidizers, we’ll help you store hazardous materials the right way. Send us your SDS list and warehouse details, and we’ll reply with a compliant rack layout and clear pricing.
