Requirements and Regulations Specific to Racking in Seattle, WA

Requirements and Regulations Specific to Racking in Seattle, WA

Warehouse racking and shelving systems are subject to local regulations and requirements. Complying with these regulations make your operation safer, and protect you and your employees. It’s not always easy to know what is required, but we’re here to help! Here are some frequently asked questions and information specific to racking in Seattle, WA and the surrounding areas.

High-Piled Combustible Storage

High-Piled Combustible Storage permit is required for facilities storing large quantities of combustible materials, typically in high racks exceeding 12 feet in height. The Seattle Fire Department (SFD) oversees this permit, ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations to minimize fire risks. Applicants must provide detailed storage plans, including layout, types of materials stored, and fire protection measures such as sprinklers and fire alarms. Regular inspections by the SFD ensure ongoing adherence to safety standards, helping to protect both the facility and its occupants.

Are Racking Permits Required in Seattle, WA?

In Seattle, WA, obtaining a rack permit is necessary for installing industrial pallet racking systems. The process involves submitting detailed plans and specifications of the racking system to the Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) for review. These plans must comply with local building codes and safety regulations, including seismic considerations due to the region’s earthquake risk. Once approved, periodic inspections may be required to ensure ongoing compliance with safety standards.

Structural Requirements for Storage Racks

In Seattle, WA, the structural requirements for storage racks are governed by the Seattle Building Code (SBC) and the Seattle Fire Code (SFC). Key requirements include:

Load Capacity

Racks must be designed to safely support the maximum intended loads, with clear labeling of load limits.

Seismic Considerations

Given Seattle’s earthquake risk, racks must be designed and anchored to withstand seismic forces as specified in the SBC.

Installation and Anchoring

Racks must be properly installed and anchored to the floor to prevent tipping or collapsing.

Fire Safety Compliance

Adequate fire protection measures, such as fire suppression systems and proper aisle widths for emergency access, must be incorporated.

Engineering Approval

Structural plans typically need to be reviewed and stamped by a licensed structural engineer to ensure compliance with all relevant codes and standards.

Compliance with these requirements is critical to ensuring the safety and stability of storage racks in industrial and commercial facilities.

About Pallet Rack Builder

When laying out your pallet rack storage system, there are starter bays and add-on bays.

Starter bays consist of two frames plus the beams, and can stand alone. Add-on bays only have one frame plus the beams, and they are designed to connect to an adjacent frame.

Each row must begin with a starter bay, and then use add-on bays to increase the length of the row. There is no limit to the number of add-on bays you can connect together in a row.
When determining the length of your row, you must account for the 3” width of each frame, in addition to your beam length.

For example, a row with two bays of 8ft beams would consist of one starter bay and one add-on bay, which would have three uprights. At 3” each, the three uprights would take up 9” of space. Add this to the two 8ft beams, for a total length of 16’ 9”.
