Key Requirements

  • You must acquire a building permit before installing pallet racking. This involves submitting detailed plans of your rack system to the local building department. These plans need to meet structural safety codes and fire safety regulations and include seismic considerations due to Washington’s location in a seismically active area.

  • Given Kent’s proximity to seismic zones, a structural engineer’s analysis and approval (often called a “P.E. stamp”) is usually required. This includes designing racks that can withstand potential seismic activity.

  • Your racking system must comply with local fire codes, which typically include ensuring proper sprinkler system access. This involves maintaining adequate flue spaces between racks to allow water from sprinklers to reach all areas in case of fire.

  • Racks must be securely anchored to the warehouse floor to prevent tipping, especially under seismic loads. The concrete slab’s load capacity needs to be analyzed to ensure it can support the racks.

  • After installation, inspections by local authorities, including fire and building departments, will confirm that the rack system meets safety and code standards. You may also need to comply with the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 296-800-22035, which requires safe storage practices, preventing hazards like sliding or collapsing items.

About Pallet Rack Builder

When laying out your pallet rack storage system, there are starter bays and add-on bays.

Starter bays consist of two frames plus the beams, and can stand alone. Add-on bays only have one frame plus the beams, and they are designed to connect to an adjacent frame.

Each row must begin with a starter bay, and then use add-on bays to increase the length of the row. There is no limit to the number of add-on bays you can connect together in a row.
When determining the length of your row, you must account for the 3” width of each frame, in addition to your beam length.

For example, a row with two bays of 8ft beams would consist of one starter bay and one add-on bay, which would have three uprights. At 3” each, the three uprights would take up 9” of space. Add this to the two 8ft beams, for a total length of 16’ 9”.
