Key Requirements

  • Permit Requirement:

A building permit is required for pallet racking installations in Tacoma. This permit ensures that the racking system meets local building codes, including structural integrity and safety standards.

  • Application:

Submit a building permit application through Tacoma’s Planning and Development Services (PDS). The application will need to include detailed plans, load calculations, and possibly seismic design criteria.

  • Seismic Design:

Tacoma is in a seismically active region, so racking systems must be designed to withstand seismic forces. This often requires involvement from a structural engineer to ensure the racks are anchored and braced according to seismic standards.

  • Seismic Zones:

Tacoma falls within Seismic Design Categories D or E, necessitating compliance with stringent seismic safety regulations.

  • Fire Suppression Systems:

Racking systems must not interfere with existing fire suppression systems. If the racks are tall, ensure that sprinkler systems are properly installed or adjusted to cover the new configuration.

  • Clearances:

Maintain sufficient clearance between racks and sprinkler heads and ensure aisle widths comply with fire safety codes.

  • Load Capacity:

The racking system must be capable of supporting the intended loads safely. Clearly label the load limits on each rack.

  • Anchoring:

Proper anchoring to the floor is crucial, particularly in a seismic zone. The racks should be anchored to prevent tipping during an earthquake.

  • OSHA Standards:

Ensure that the racking installation adheres to OSHA regulations for workplace safety. This includes proper labeling, safe access for workers, and ensuring that the racks do not pose a hazard.

  • Pre-Installation Inspection:

Consider a pre-installation inspection by a structural engineer or a qualified inspector to ensure compliance with all requirements.

  • Final Inspection:

After installation, the system will need to be inspected by Tacoma’s Building Department to verify compliance with the permit and safety regulations.

  • Zoning Compliance:

Ensure the racking installation complies with Tacoma’s zoning and land use regulations, particularly if it impacts building occupancy or use.

About Pallet Rack Builder

When laying out your pallet rack storage system, there are starter bays and add-on bays.

Starter bays consist of two frames plus the beams, and can stand alone. Add-on bays only have one frame plus the beams, and they are designed to connect to an adjacent frame.

Each row must begin with a starter bay, and then use add-on bays to increase the length of the row. There is no limit to the number of add-on bays you can connect together in a row.
When determining the length of your row, you must account for the 3” width of each frame, in addition to your beam length.

For example, a row with two bays of 8ft beams would consist of one starter bay and one add-on bay, which would have three uprights. At 3” each, the three uprights would take up 9” of space. Add this to the two 8ft beams, for a total length of 16’ 9”.
